Letter to the editor: Scholarships should be based on merit, not age

Posted

Imagine doing so well academically that you get shut out of vital opportunities. That's a part of my story that I need your help with. I am 12 years old, homeschooled, and a sophomore in high school. I am writing about a public petition I recently started. The petition addresses an issue many advanced students face: age restrictions on scholarships. Because many scholarships require students to be older, younger students who are academically ready lose access to opportunities that should be based on merit rather than age.

In just a short time, the petition has already gained dozens of signatures and strong community engagement. Support has come not only from residents but from people across the country, including states like New York and Texas, showing that this issue affects students nationwide. My goal is to gather this support and then send an official letter to several private and local scholarship organizations to show that people believe this policy should change. Students who work hard and achieve at a high level should have equal access to scholarships, regardless of age or educational path. Removing these restrictions would allow all students to pursue their education without unnecessary barriers or financial strain.

I hope readers will take an interest in this issue and help raise awareness. It is something many people do not think about, but it affects real students. The petition can be signed at https://c.org/X6VwWnCjhb. Because it is an unofficial petition, even kids can sign, allowing the voices of the students most affected to be included. The only way to turn this around is with your support. Sign and share today!

Sincerely,

Randi Anderson
