Letter to the editor: Supporting Battle Ground levy is vital

Posted

History teaches us that the greatest civilizations have always had great education systems. In our modern society, a free and appropriate public education remains the right of every child. It's the single most effective tool we have for leveling the playing field.

In Washington, our state constitution is clear: education is the paramount duty of the state. However, the reality of our funding model requires local funding, which is by design.

Battle Ground Public Schools is running a replacement levy, and the stakes could not be higher. Last year, the levy failed. To maintain safety and basic operations this school year, the district was forced to deplete its savings account. There is no safety net left. If this replacement levy fails again, the word “catastrophic” is not an exaggeration; it is a certainty.

We aren't just talking about a few line items on a budget. We are talking about the very people who make our schools safe and functional. We are talking about teachers who are subject-matter experts, and staff who serve as part-time mentors and guardians for our children.

Without levy funding, we face the heartbreaking prospect of consolidating entire schools and making dramatic cuts to every job category, including principals, secretaries, support staff, and educators in the classroom.

Furthermore, we risk losing the clubs, sports, and extracurricular activities that transform students into well-rounded, disciplined adults. These programs are what keep students engaged and connected to their community. Once these programs and positions are cut, the impact will take years to recover from, if ever. There is currently a well-organized movement urging a “no” vote, but we must ask ourselves what kind of future we are voting for. Supporting the local levy is not just a financial decision; it is a collective civic duty. It is an investment in the foundation of our community.

Whether you have children in the district or not, the health of our schools dictates the health of our local economy and our future. If you live in Battle Ground, you know the value of a strong, safe community. That strength starts in the classroom. Please join me in supporting our students, our educators, and our future by voting "yes" on the upcoming replacement levy.
