I was deeply disturbed to read Woodland School Board member and candidate Trish Huddleston’s candidate statement, in which she wrote that there is “no such thing as a trans kid” and that parents who support their transgender children are “sick” and “enabling.”
Those words are not just offensive — they are dangerous. Transgender and gender-diverse youth do exist. They are our students, neighbors, and family members. They deserve safety, dignity, and understanding from the adults responsible for their education.
Statements like hers have real consequences. LGBTQ+ students already face high rates of bullying, depression, and suicide. When community leaders deny their existence or attack their families, it sends a devastating message that these kids don’t belong. That is not leadership — it’s harm.
Our schools should be safe havens where every student feels valued and protected. Our elected officials should model empathy, integrity, and inclusion. Ms. Huddleston’s words do the opposite — they divide and demean. School board members are elected to serve all students, not just those who fit their personal beliefs.
As a voter and community member, I want to be clear: I will never support or vote for Trish Huddleston, whether she runs opposed or unopposed. Woodland deserves leaders who build understanding, not fear — and who treat every child with respect and Humanity.
