Letter to the editor: We can choose freedom

Posted

Thank you, Darrell Anderson, for last week’s letter on the dichotomy of force or freedom.

Recently, historian Jon Meacham said, “The forces for Donald Trump are perennial. He is not an aberration but a manifestation of the darker elements that have coursed through American society and history. When we are at our best, we make those forces ebb, and when we’re at our worst, they flow.” (Brene Brown’s podcast, Dare to Lead).

Jon Meacham makes Mr. Anderson’s point. We can correlate Mr. Anderson’s ideas of force as part of the flow of the darker forces and freedom is part of the ebbing of those darker forces.

We can see that “flow” in abundance from the Trump White House. Just the other day, Trump suggested that he might personally “go after” a well-respected journalist, Jonathan Karl, accusing him of “hate speech” for “being unfair to me.”

Trump was caught on camera saying that maybe he might personally “go after” the journalist.

It takes 3.5% of the voting population, 15 million people, to consistently demonstrate that Trump’s narrative is wrong. Trump only has force and coercion on his side, and he can’t silence us all. By joining, together we can help to stem the tide of authoritarianism. It has been said that freedom without support is abandonment, so let us support one another in choosing freedom. We can attend Indivisible’s No Kings rally on Oct. 18 at Gretchen Frasier Neighborhood Park from noon to 2 p.m., or other such rallies.

We can write to the newspaper as Mr. Anderson has demonstrated. By gathering we can speak volumes to Trump, who counts his wellbeing like a weathervane shows which way the wind blows.
