Last week, residents of Battle Ground and beyond gained a new place for baked goods and coffee.
Rabbit Hole Eatery and Coffee is new on the list of Battle Ground options.
Owner Isaac Taylor has been in the restaurant industry since he was 15 years old. He just moved to Battle Ground a little over a month ago with his wife, Francey. Taylor has held numerous titles in the industry. Now, he has brought his talent and efforts to a city saturated with coffee joints — but his spot goes down a rabbit hole, as its name suggests.
“So, my wife and I were in Bozeman, where we have a lot of family, and I was working at a place there just helping them kind of turn it around, and we were like, ‘Hey, this is really fun. We enjoy it. Let’s start shopping for a coffee shop,’” he said. “We looked all over the country, everywhere from places like Virginia to Washington. We found this one, and we just like the space. We like Battle Ground, and we like the area.”
Rabbit Hole Eatery and Coffee resides in the location of what was previously Sweetly Bakery and Coffee Bar.
“We bought it, and then we started painting the walls the very next day,” Taylor said.
Taylor said the name packs a lot of life meaning.
“You know, life is complicated,” he said. “A lot of people are going through different things. Sometimes, we’re celebrating and we’re excited. Sometimes, we’re grieving. Sometimes, we have challenges, you know, life. Different people are experiencing different things, and so our kind of thought process was with, ‘Life is a rabbit hole,’ in that we hope we can serve people regardless of what they’re going through.”
As for the menu, there’s tea, matcha, chai and a lot of coffee. For the feasting rabbits, there are many baked goods. So many that it is best to just go see for yourself. Among the offerings are cinnamon rolls, kolaches, cookies and specially-made items that are gluten-free and flourless. All of it is crafted from high-quality ingredients at a competitive price after Taylor scouted out the area coffee and bakery economy.
For Taylor, his wife and his crew behind the counter, the clientele of a coffee shop is often a rabbit hole of surprises and then familiar faces after a while.
“Something that’s unique about coffee shops compared to other places is people will come in every single day to the same coffee shop to where if you don’t see them you’re worried about them, you're going to call,” he said. “And that’s been a really fun and cool and rewarding experience to see that. Because when you see someone every single day, sometimes they’re not in the best mood or sometimes they’re going through something. Sometimes they’re really, really happy and really, really excited. … We can take care of you regardless of what phase of life you’re in.”
