Chickens were nearly crossing the road as a semi-truck full of live poultry overturned on the Interstate 5 northbound Exit 16 on-ramp on Wednesday, Sept. 23, near the ilani Casino Resort.
The accident caused nearly an entire workday’s worth of road closure as the crash occurred at 9:39 a.m. with the roadway being reopened around 5:20 p.m. Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) stated on Sept. 23 it was unknown how many chickens were on the semi and how many did not survive the crash.
The Washington State Patrol (WSP) press memo for the incident stated the semi truck was traveling eastbound on Northwest 319th Street when the driver failed to negotiate the curve onto northbound I-5. The semi truck’s rear wheels struck the curb, causing the truck and trailer to overturn onto its side, WSP stated.
The WSP press memo stated no drugs or alcohol was involved, but the driver was cited for the incident.
WSDOT poked a little bit of fun at the situation on social media, “It’s a bit of a fowl situation.”
Multiple law enforcement agencies, fire personnel, WSDOT crews and animal control worked on scene to safely collect the spilled chickens.
