New owner, familiar faces: BevRidge Public celebrates grand reopening in Ridgefield

A kids’ soccer game sideline conversation led to an ownership transition of BevRidge Public, a beloved local restaurant and bar in Ridgefield.

Jafet Lopez, the new owner and a restaurant industry veteran, tells the story of how it began while coaching his kids’ soccer team. He had mentioned to Sherman, a fellow soccer parent and co-owner of Brothers Cascadia Brewing, that he hoped to own his own restaurant when the time was right.

Sherman, who knew Ashley Gurrad, the original owner of BevRidge, told Lopez he should contact her. That connection led to the ownership transfer celebrated with a grand reopening on Saturday, Aug. 8.

BevRidge Public first opened in 2023 as a beverage-forward pub establishment. Regulars began suggesting a heartier food menu, and they answered the call, adding more options and thus transitioning into more of a restaurant than a bar. Lopez said he and Gurrad hit it off in their initial conversations over their shared vision of what the space should be: a community gathering place that strives to excel at hospitality and a wonderful guest experience.

Same place, elevated experience

As Lopez takes over, he stresses that there are no major changes, only improvements in the plans.

“I want everyone to have a great experience and feel like this place is for them,” he said. “I’m trying to take it to the next level with an elevated cuisine experience and a more upbeat environment."

For example, themed music, such as Latin, to go along with Taco Tuesday. He’s also rolled out some new menu options, such as steak and frites, caprese salad, and bone marrow as an appetizer.

Lopez said he wants the experience to be accessible for families, pointing to the restaurant's happy hour as a way to make dining out more affordable. Happy hour runs Monday-Sunday from 3-6 p.m. and 8 p.m.-close.

Jessica Haberman, a local who dines there regularly with her family of six, expressed satisfaction with the kids’ meals, saying that the presentation is very kid-friendly, and the meals included bottomless lemonade.

Community roots

Lopez pointed out that in addition to a great dining experience, he plans to use his profits to benefit the community, citing support for local youth sports and a forthcoming donation to La Center Elementary, where his kids attend.

As a resident of La Center, he’s learned that there are families who can’t afford lunch or new shoes for their children; his donation is to help provide for that need. His deeper motivation hits closer to home.

“I’m doing this for my family,” he said of his restaurant ownership endeavor. “I want to set them up for their future.”

Looking forward, Lopez has plans to expand to additional locations, which will include small speakeasy bars with different cultural themes.

But, for now, he’s all in on maintaining and improving BevRidge’s community vibe.
