New steel artwork has been installed in the center island of Ridgefield’s roundabout at Pioneer Street and Discovery Drive, featuring bird silhouettes inspired by the nearby wildlife refuge.
The project was completed through a partnership between the city and Alpha Iron, a Ridgefield-based steel fabricator. During planning, Alpha Iron proposed involving students from Ridgefield High School’s Metal Technology program in the fabrication process, according to a news release by the City of Ridgefield.
Students visited Alpha Iron’s workshop in October to receive training, learn about industrial equipment and assist in fabricating the pieces. The experience provided hands-on exposure to skilled trades while allowing students to contribute to a permanent public feature in their community.
“The installed artwork represents more than the birds it depicts,” the city stated in the release. “It reflects collaboration between local students, local business and local government.”
