‘No King Ferguson’: Washington Republicans plan protest of their own

The Washington state Republican Party has announced it will hold a protest titled “No King Ferguson” at noon on Saturday, March 28.

It will be held at the State Capitol in Olympia, on the East Campus, across Capitol Way from the Dome. The protest will be located near the Korean War Memorial, according to Washington GOP Chair Jim Walsh.

“Fight the tyranny of outrageous taxation,” an online statement from the party said. “Urge Governor Bob Ferguson to veto the illegal and unconstitutional state income tax, falsely dubbed a ‘millionaire's tax.’ With massive capital flight already happening, it won't be long before greedy Democrats in Olympia come after your hard-earned paycheck.”

The Republican protest will come on the same day as the “No Kings 3” protest, which is being held at locations throughout the country in opposition to the Trump administration and its actions.

The “millionaire's tax,” as it was named by Democrats who supported the legislation, is a new income tax. The 9.9% tax on earnings over $1 million would affect about 30,000 Washington taxpayers, with collections beginning in 2029.

Republicans, who universally opposed the legislation, contend that Washington’s constitution bars the state from collecting an income tax, citing case history.

The legislation currently awaits the signature of Gov. Ferguson.
