Some might overlook Battle Ground defensive back Jackson Fick on the football field.
Some might simply think they will run straight past him, or through him.
Some might just generally underestimate him.
Those who do so simply do not know him.
“I hope people underestimate me, because then, when I get a chance, I can just prove them wrong,” Fick said following Battle Ground’s 20-0 victory over the Prairie Falcons Friday, Sept. 11.
This season marks Fick’s senior year. He has developed into a strong leader, one who recognizes and appreciates development across all grade levels.
“It means a lot. I’m surrounded by a lot of good seniors, and underclassmen, too. We have a really special group,” Fick said. “I love playing with all of them, and we get really close during the week and it makes it fun, which makes us play better.”
Fick added the Battle Ground football program gives the underclassmen a lot of opportunities, and a lot of repetitions during practice, and he enjoys cheering them on and helping them develop.
Fick is a playmaker and flies around the field whistle-to-whistle, sideline-to-sideline, with great tenacity. In the Tigers’ game against the Prairie Falcons on Sept. 11, he chased down a deep pass for an interception, sealing the victory late in the fourth quarter.
“I was really excited to see the ball in the air with no one around,” Fick said. “So I was just thinking about catching it and securing the game.”
Fick is also the kicker on the kickoff team, with hopes of kicking a different ball after he graduates with the class of 2027.
“I’m looking to go to college and hopefully play soccer,” Fick said. “I’m pretty much open to everything right now, but I’m hoping to play soccer and continuing that through college.”
