Since Friday, Sept. 11 at 10 p.m., all lanes along a highly trafficked two-mile stretch of southbound Interstate-5 winding through Portland’s Rose Quarter have been closed day and night for extensive repairs.
The lane closures will remain in effect until Oct. 17. All northbound lanes will remain open through the southbound closures.
Part of the Oregon Department of Transportation’s Rose Quarter Improvement Project, the closure addresses belated repairs and updates, while impacts may inconvenience commuters and local travellers.
The Washington State Department of Transportation warns drivers to expect congestion stretching into Vancouver, clogging on-ramps for I-5 and I-205.
According to the City of Vancouver’s website, cityofvancouver.us/i-5-closure-resources, collaboration between the City, WSDOT and ODOT allows the Traffic Management Center to monitor key intersections and ramps in order to adjust signal timing and guide the pace of vehicles entering the roadway.
Both ODOT and WSDOT urge drivers to plan alternate routes, travel outside of peak hours (6 a.m. to 9 a.m., and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.), or by train or bike; to carpool; or to work from home during this time.
