Clark County Treasurer Alishia Topper is encouraging customers who pay in cash at government agencies to use exact change following a nationwide shortage of pennies after the U.S. Treasury Department stopped minting the coins for circulation.
The shortage has limited banks’ ability to supply pennies, which the Clark County Treasurer’s Office confirmed with its primary banking partner, JPMorgan Chase, a Clark County news release stated.
“While pennies may seem insignificant, the inability to reliably obtain them has real operational impacts for public offices that accept cash,” Topper said in the release. “Our responsibility is to manage public funds carefully, communicate clearly with the public, and avoid unnecessary administrative costs or burdens on customers.”
In response, the Treasurer’s Office has begun posting signage requesting exact change for cash transactions. Other organisations choosing this approach should also post clear signage informing customers of the policy change, the release stated.
The Treasurer’s Office will continue monitoring the situation and provide updates as guidance changes. For more information, contact the Clark County Treasurer’s Office at 564-397-2255.
