A private ceremony for Battle Ground Police Department Sgt. Richard Kelly is set for Saturday, the city announced Tuesday evening.

The memorial service will be hosted for Kelly’s family, close friends and members of local law enforcement, a release from the city stated. The memorial service will be streamed starting at 2:20 p.m. Aug. 19 at client.tribucast.com/tcid/7839016751 for other members of the community to take part.

Kelly died Thursday, Aug. 10, following a medical emergency while on duty, the city reported last week.

“This past week has been difficult for the entire Battle Ground community, none more so than the family of Sergeant Kelly and the members of the Battle Ground Police Department,” the release stated. “On behalf of Sergeant Kelly’s family, the City of Battle Ground would like to express thanks and appreciation to all those who have offered their words of comfort, shared memories of Sergeant Kelly, and honored his many years of dedicated service to our community.”

In lieu of flowers, the “Rick Kelly Memorial Fund” has been set up by the Battle Ground Police Officers Association, to support Kelly’s family with funeral expenses and to establish a memorial in his honor, the release stated.
