State fire mobilization authorized for Nakia Creek Fire

State fire assistance has been mobilized for the Nakia Creek Fire in Clark County as the fire grew to an estimated 400 acres on Sunday.

John Batiste, the chief of Washington State Patrol, authorized the mobilization of state firefighting resources at the request of Fire District 3 Chief Scott Sorenson and Fire Chief Michael Carnes of East County Fire and Rescue.

The fire, which started at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Oct. 9 near the town of Camas, is burning in timber, brush and grass, stated a news release from WSP. 

Evacuation levels are currently in place as approximately 1,000 homes are threatened. 

The State Emergency Operations Center at Camp Murray remains activated at a level two to help coordinate state assistance for the fire. 

“Mobilization specialists from the Fire Protection Bureau are in the process of ordering multiple strike teams,” stated the WSP release. “The fire is currently being managed by a Type 3 Incident Management Team with an additional team en route from Oregon. State Fire Marshal’s Office personnel will be on scene and working remotely to coordinate the dispatch of resources.”

Level 1, 2 and 3 evacuations are currently in place. 



Evacuation notices have been sent out and increased on the Nakia Creek Fire,” stated a release from Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency (CRESA). “This is in the area of the L1500 and L1560 roads off of Jones Creek Road.”

Anyone within the red zone of the fire is on a level 3 “go now” evacuation notice, while those in the yellow zone are at a level 2 “be set” evacuation notice.

Those in the green zone of the fire are at a level 1 “be set” evacuation notice.

“Please understand that this is a very dynamic situation and if you are anywhere near this area, you should take precautions to evacuate,” stated the release from CRESA.  “Additional maps and evacuations may still come.”

A shelter is located at Camas Church of Nazarene at 2204 NE Birch St. in Camas. A livestock shelter is located at the Clark County Fairgrounds at 17402 NE Delfel Road in Ridgefield. For assistance with the livestock shelter, call 360-607-2535.
