Temperatures set to increase after surprise dose of snow last week

After some people were surprised with snow last week in North Clark County, the National Weather Service in Portland said the upcoming week will bring rain and warmer temperatures.

On Wednesday, April 12, snow totals ranged from a trace to half an inch across the region, according to NWS.

“We had this upper level low come into the area and it actually drove two little lows at the surface to spin up … (in) a little Fujiwhara effect,” Noah Alviz with NWS said.

One of the low pressure systems came through the Portland area and brought the precipitation band that brought the snow.

As the day continued on April 12, the low weakened and left the region giving way to sunshine and spotty showers, according to Alviz.

“There’s a lot of micro-climates in the area,” Alviz said, explaining the region’s weather patterns.

With various micro-climates in North Clark County and elevation changes, snow totals can vary drastically even when only separated by a handful of miles.

Alviz said this week was set to start with temperatures near 50 degrees and a chance of rain. On Tuesday, April 18, there was a chance of rain for North Clark County with snow levels dropping to 1,900 feet after midnight.

On Wednesday, April 19, people in the region can expect a chance of rain with snow levels increasing to 3,000 feet in the afternoon.

On Thursday, April 20, temperatures were expected to increase again with a high of 53 degrees and a chance of rain. Those temperatures are expected to continue into Friday.
