West Main Commons mixed-use project breaks ground in city of Battle Ground

A project that once had an “Opening early 2024” sign along Main Street in Battle Ground has finally broken ground, and construction is now underway in the final quarter of 2025.

Action on the site started to ramp up in September, just east of Battle Ground’s only hotel. The project was first announced in September 2022, when The Reflector reported that the Battle Ground City Council voted 5-2 to approve the West Main Commons development agreement between the city and developer Deacon Development on Sept. 6 of that year.

The mixed-use project is located at 1305 W. Main St. The West Main Commons project takes one of the few remaining Main Street frontage properties in Battle Ground’s core from 20th Avenue east to Grace Avenue.

The development’s commercial spaces are located along Main Street, with a main access point from just eastbound traffic. However, all directions of Main Street traffic can access the development, as Southwest First Way will be extended into the project from Southwest 15th Avenue, which intersects with West Main Street at a traffic light. The new stretch of Southwest First Way will divide the commercial and residential portions of the mixed-use development. The apartment portion will be connected to the retail and medical areas via a public promenade, as shown on the site plans.

According to the project’s website, the development would be a new “all-inclusive retail and medical experience.” In addition to three retail spaces, a two-story, 16,000-square-foot medical building would be included. The 225-unit apartment community will be connected by a public promenade.

The retail brochure also outlines regional impacts, as the Battle Ground Public Schools district boundary has a population of 85,462.

According to the project’s retail brochure, which stated the space would be available in the summer of 2024, building D would be a drive-thru Brewed Awakenings; building C would include a dental space and the 4,000-square-foot “Barbie Lounge,” while building A would include an OnPoint Credit Union.

The medical brochure details that the building will be a two-floor, divisible space for multiple practices.

A neighboring mixed-use building would also continue to enhance the concept of retail and residential in Battle Ground. The project titled “SW 15TH AVE KIRKLAND BLDG,” on the public information portal, passed the pre-application conference and was at 50% completed on a Type II Land Use Decision as of Friday, Sept. 26.

The Kirkland Battle Ground Lofts project is proposed as a four-story mixed-use building with a total area of 108,000 square feet. The project is proposed just south of the Best Western hotel along Southwest 15th Avenue.

The building would feature retail on the first floor, facing Southwest 15th Avenue, with three floors of multi-family residential units. According to the project narrative, the site would include 117 parking spaces for residents and 16 parking stalls for commercial businesses.
