From wrestling to basketball, area high school gyms have packed schedules to start the first two weeks of the winter sports season.
Basketball
In boys basketball, La Center will host Ridgefield for a home opener at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, in the battle of the SpudCat. The Spudders will then host Kelso High School for their home opener at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5.
The Woodland boys basketball team kicks off its home court season with a game against Centralia High School at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5. Across the coverage zone, the Hockinson boys squad will host W F West High School (Chehalis) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6. The Prairie and Battle Ground boys and girls programs battled it out in The Cage at Battle Ground High School on Tuesday, Dec. 3, but results were not available at press time. The Tiger boys next host Heritage High School at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, while the Falcon boys next host Union High School at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, in The Nest.
The Tiger girls program next hosts the La Center Wildcats at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6. The La Center girls first hosted Heritage High School on Tuesday, Dec. 3, but results were not available at press time. The Wildcats’ next home game is against Woodland High School on Monday, Dec. 16.
The Ridgefield Spudder girls host Prairie High School at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, while the Falcons’ first home game isn’t scheduled until Saturday, Dec. 14, against Skyview High School, time not provided. The Woodland girls host Kalama High School at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4, while the Hockinson girls first hosted Centralia High School on Tuesday, Dec. 3, but results were not available at press time. Their next home game is slated for 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, against Heritage High School.
Wrestling
Kicking off the 2A Greater St. Helens League wrestling season is Ridgefield vs. Hockinson at Hockinson High School at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4. The Woodland Beavers begin 2A GSHL matches against the Hockinson Hawks at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at home.
Battle Ground and Prairie begin their wrestling regular seasons against each other at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, at Battle Ground High School. La Center begins its season with the Wildcat Invite at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, according to the 1A Trico League website.
