Debbie Smith, a work-based learning and community outreach coordinator at Summit View High School, has received the statewide Counseling and Career Development Professional Award from the Washington Association for Career and Technical Education for her efforts in connecting students with career opportunities.

Each year, Smith and her colleagues help hundreds of students earn credit through job placements with local employers and assist businesses in meeting legal requirements for hiring minors, a press release by Battle Ground Public Schools stated.

She became eligible for the state award after winning the 2024 regional award for Southwest Washington, recognizing her work to expand career opportunities and build pathways to employment, the release stated.

With this honor, Smith is now in the running for the nationwide Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) award.
