Youth pheasant hunt to take place Sept. 16-17

Youth hunters in Clark County will be able to have a special opportunity to hunt pheasants this weekend courtesy of an ongoing collaboration between the Vancouver Wildlife League (VWL) and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).

On Saturday Sept. 16 and Sunday Sept. 17, volunteers with the VWL will host their annual youth pheasant hunt with support from WDFW’s hunter education program. The event will be held at two locations on the Shillapoo Wildlife Area, northwest of Vancouver:

• La Frombois Road near the Vancouver Lake boat launch site

• Lower River Road beyond Frenchman’s Bar near Caterpillar Island

Pre-registration is not required. Youth under 16 may show up at one of the two locations from 7:30 a.m.-8 a.m. to sign up for the hunt. A firearms safety discussion before hunters proceed into the field after 8 a.m. with hunting dogs will take place.

Hunters must follow the following rules:

• Wear 400 square inches of blaze orange or blaze pink

• Use non-toxic shot

• Possess a Western Washington pheasant hunting license ($40.50); a small-game license is not required

• Hunting is allowed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• The bag limit is two pheasants of either sex per day

• VWL will provide a lunch for youth hunters

WDFW advises the use of eye and ear protection for all hunters.
