45th anniversary of the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption to be marked

Scientists and preparedness experts will be at the Science and Learning Center at Coldwater on May 18 to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Mount St. Helens eruption on May 18, 1980, which killed 57 people and forever altered the landscape.

Representatives from the Washington Emergency Management Division, USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory, the Mount St. Helens Institute, National Volcanic Monument Rangers and more are set to speak to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

According to the Washington Emergency Management Division, other events ahead of the day of the eruption anniversary include:

  • 6:30 p.m. Wednesday: Alysa Adams, lead interpretive specialist of the Mount St. Helens Visitor Center, is hosting an online lecture on the anniversary. Register and purchase tickets at www.mshinstitute.org/learn/volcano-views-brews.html
  • 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday: USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory is holding an open house at 1300 SE Cardinal Crt., Vancouver, which is set to include equipment demonstrations and geologists on hand to investigate attendees' mystery rocks.
