Area basketball teams wrapping up league play as February approaches

February marks the regular season coming to a close and the postseason ensuing for high school teams across the state of Washington. Here’s how area teams are faring as of press time.

Battle Ground Tigers

The Tiger boys sat as the third seed in the 4A Greater St. Helens League (GSHL) with a league record of 1-2 as of Monday, Jan. 29. They faced the Union Titans at home, who are 0-3 in league play, on Tuesday, Jan. 30, but results were unavailable at press time. The Tigers travel to Skyview High School for a league matchup at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1 and also play at Camas High School to close out the regular season at 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 5. The third seed in the GSHL will play the fifth seed from the South Puget Sound League on Feb. 10 in a loser-out game in the district 3/4 tournament.

The Tiger girls are on the outside looking in as they’re 0-3 in the 4A GSHL before their final three league matchups. They lost their first three league games with a combined score of 236-49. The Tigers played at Union High School on Tuesday, Jan. 30 and host Skyview High School on Thursday, Feb. 1 and the Camas Papermakers on Monday, Feb. 5.

Prairie Falcons

The Prairie boys sat in the third spot in the 3A GSHL at 3-3 in league play. They hosted Heritage High School on Tuesday, Jan. 30 and will travel to Evergreen High School to conclude league play at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1. They have a leg up on Mountain View High School who sit at 2-4 in league play as of Monday. The No. 3 seed from the GSHL will play in a loser-out game against the third seed of the North Puget Sound League on Feb. 10 in the district 3/4 tournament.

The Prairie girls were 2-4 in league play but could improve to 4-4 with a win on Tuesday and Thursday this week. They played at last place Heritage High School on Tuesday, Jan. 30 and host No. 2 spot Evergreen High School at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1.

Ridgefield Spudders

The Spudder boys sat at 9-3 in the 2A GSHL on Monday, which is good for third in the league. They then entered a busy four-game week. They hosted the Hockinson Hawks on Monday, Jan. 29, and traveled to Columbia River High School on Tuesday, Jan. 30, but results were unavailable at press time. The Spudders host Woodland High School at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 1 and Washougal High School at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 3. Five teams from the 2A GSHL advance to the district 4 tournament, seeds No. 3 and 4 are guaranteed a second day, with the first games scheduled for Feb. 10.

The Spudder girls continue to roll in the 2A GSHL with an 11-1 standing on Monday before their final four games. The Spudders hosted the Hockinson Hawks on Monday, Jan. 29 before their matchup with the top-seeded Columbia River Rapids at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 31. They also travel to play Woodland High School at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2 and Washougal High School at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6. As the two-seed in the GSHL, the Spudders would host the third seed in the Evergreen Conference on Feb. 9 in the district 4 tournament.



Hockinson Hawks

The Hockinson boys sat with a multiple-game cushion at the five seed in the 2A GSHL at 8-5, R.A. Long of Longview was fourth, also at 8-5, as of Monday. The Hawks’ standings could change with three games left. They played at Ridgefield on Monday, Jan. 29 and play at home against Washougal High School at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1 before a 7 p.m. road game against the Columbia River Rapids on Monday, Feb. 5. As the fifth seed, the Hawks could host a loser-out game against the Evergreen Conference fourth seed on Feb. 8. As the fourth seed, the Hawks would be guaranteed a second chance with the first game at the Evergreen Conference No. 1 seed on Feb. 10 in the district 4 tournament.

The Hockinson girls are last in league at 1-12 in the 2A GSHL. They traveled to Ridgefield High School on Monday, Jan. 29 and will travel to Washougal High School for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Friday, Feb. 2. The Hawks will close their season out at home against the Columbia River Rapids at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5.

Woodland Beavers

The Woodland boys are out of postseason contention at 2-11 in the 2A GSHL before their last three games. They hosted Fort Vancouver High School on Monday, Jan. 29 and Hudson’s Bay High School on Tuesday, Jan. 30. The Beavers close out their season at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 1 at Ridgefield High School.

The Woodland girls sat just outside the third spot in the 2A GSHL while in sixth place on Monday. They were on a three-game winning streak before the week began with Fort Vancouver High School on the road on Monday. They play at Hudson’s Bay High School at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 31. They close out the season at home against Ridgefield High School at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 2. Only the top five from the GSHL advance to the district 4 tournament.

La Center Wildcats

The Wildcat boys sat with a two-game advantage as the third seed prior to their three-game closing week in the 1A Trico League. They were 4-3 in league play before traveling to Columbia-White Salmon High School on Tuesday. They host Castle Rock High School at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1 and Columbia-White Salmon High School at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2. As the third seed, the Wildcats would play against the Evergreen League No. 2 seed on the road on Feb. 7 in the district 4 tournament.

The Wildcat girls sat as the fourth seed at 3-5 in 1A Trico League play with the Castle Rock Rockets as the fifth seed at 3-5. The Wildcats host the last-place Columbia-White Salmon High School on  Wednesday, Jan. 31. Only four advance to the district 4 tournament. The Wildcats take on the Castle Rock Rockets at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 2 on the road.
