Roberta Fischer, of Battle Ground, turned 100 years old on Tuesday, Feb. 4, with her family spending valuable time with her.

“It’s a real honor,” Fischer said of turning 100.
She also said that crossing the century mark is a real miracle, adding that she would have never seen 100 without her family.

“My family is most important next to the Lord,” Fischer said. “It means to me that the Lord has really been with us.”

Even turning 100, Fischer received money as a gift. She told her family that she wanted to go shopping for a trinket. They said the money was burning a hole in her pocket.

At 100 years old, Fischer is looking toward another half decade or so of life, as one of her aunts lived to be 105.

Through the course of her life, Fischer was a nurse for 30 years and co-owned a greenhouse with her husband. Fischer came from the Walla Walla area to Portland, later moving to Battle Ground in 1975. She worked at the Walla Walla General Hospital where she saw hundreds of babies born in the labor and delivery department.

According to her family, Fischer would blow students away with how strong she was for having such a small frame as a guest at a geriatric chiropractic university. Students started to believe that they could treat anyone after speaking with Fischer, they said. Fischer did that until age 95.

Born in 1925, Fischer was married to her husband, Curt, in 1947 in a double wedding with her best friend. The two couples later celebrated their wedding anniversary together in 1997.

Fischer and her husband owned and operated Curt’s Greenhouse for over 40 years. Organic gardening became her specialty.

Moving to Battle Ground, Fischer was very involved in the Columbia Adventist Academy with children’s classes and vacation Bible schools. Even within the last decade, she worked with the Adventist community service center making quilts for those in need.

Fischer has lived a clean life, having never drank alcohol or smoked, her family said. An emphasis on nutrition and eating healthy were also key aspects in her life, which have led to turning 100, her family said.
