Clark County encourages residents to safely dispose of holiday waste

With the holiday season’s arrival, Clark County Public Health is encouraging residents to safely dispose of waste this winter. Proper recycling and disposal keeps waste workers safe while protecting the environment.

Christmas gift wrap and ribbons without glitter, foil or other non-paper elements may be placed in curbside recycling bins. Decorations featuring non-paper materials must go in the garbage can, a news release by Clark County Public Health’s Solid Waste Education and Outreach team stated.

Gift-packing materials, such as bubble wrap, air pillows and plastic film require recycling at designated facilities. Leaving thin plastic materials in the recycling bin can jam Waste Connections’ sorting machinery. These types of materials may be recycled at many local grocery stores or any Clark County Waste Connections transfer station, the news release stated.

Bulky packing materials such as block foam can be recycled at specialty facilities. Block foam may be disposed of outside of curbside garbage carts or recycled at Earth Friendly Recycling, 11825 NE 113th St., Suite 100, Vancouver, the news release stated.

Electronics and batteries must be disposed of at designated facilities due to fire and chemical hazards. Electronics and batteries pose a significant fire hazard when mixed with household garbage and can explode. String lights may be disposed of in the curbside garbage cart or taken to a specialty recycling facility, the release stated.
