Cowlitz County teen faces assault charge after baby injured

A 14-year-old is facing an assault charge for allegedly stepping on and hitting a 3-month-old in late July.

The Daily News is not naming the suspect because he is being tried in Cowlitz County Juvenile Court.

The court ordered a competency evaluation for the defendant because his family says he hears voices.

According to the July 28 police report, Kelso police officers were dispatched to a Kelso home after a report of someone stepping on a baby's stomach.

Authorities say the baby had a bruised and scraped face. Once at Peace Health St. John Medical Center, medical personnel found the infant had multiple fractures to her skull, but at different stages of healing, arresting documents show.

The report also says the teen was mad about the baby's incessant crying, so he kicked the 3-month-old in the head. He also reportedly said he wanted to kill the infant.

Cowlitz County Court Commissioner Jill Karmy appointed an attorney to represent the teen, and set his bail at $100,000 on July 29; the bail was maintained during last week's hearing.

Court records show a no-contact order was also issued on Aug. 5. The suspect faces first-degree assault, a class A felony in Washington state.

The defendant has a motion hearing set for Aug. 19.
