The Cowlitz Indian Tribe is one of four Washington entities set to receive funds from the state’s Clean Energy Fund.

The Cowlitz Tribe will receive $150,000 for its “Fleet Electrification and Resilient Energy Project,” the Washington State Department of Commerce announced on March 20. The funding is intended to combine renewable energy generation with an electric vehicle charging station at the tribe’s Longview headquarters that uses minimal energy from the existing grid, the announcement stated.

Other groups to receive funds include the Nisqually and Squaxin Indian tribes, and Yakama Power, the release stated. In total, nearly $1 million will be distributed through the commerce department’s Clean Energy Fund grants.

“These projects are exciting examples of collaborations between Washington’s tribal and local government leaders and utilities, building on shared values of environmental stewardship and equitable economic opportunity to advance our transportation electrification goals,” Commerce Interim Director Kendrick Stewart stated in the announcement.

The Clean Energy Fund was created to provide a public benefit through the deployment of clean energy technologies intended to save energy and reduce energy costs, reduce harmful air emissions, or otherwise increase energy independence for the state, the announcement stated. A second round of grant applications, which closed March 6, is currently being reviewed.
