Hockinson arson: second suspect arrested

After more than three weeks on the run, alleged arsonist Daniel Cronin, 35, was caught last week at the Ridgecrest Timbers Apartments in the St. John’s neighborhood of Portland after a three-hour standoff.

Responding law enforcement included Portland Police Bureau Special Emergency Reaction Team and Washington County Sheriff's Office Tactical Negotiation Team. Residents of the apartments were asked to not leave their units throughout the three-hour standoff.

Cronin was arrested on two warrants and booked in the Multnomah County Jail.

The first arrest made in the arson case was Joshua Roland, 29, who, along with Cronin, allegedly burglarized and set fire to the home of Hockinson residents Jamon and Chyra Holmgren on Christmas Eve while they were at church. Joshua Roland was arrested on Jan. 5, at the Embassy Suites on Airport Way in Portland.

“I felt more of a sense of relief than I even anticipated when I heard the news,” Jamon Holmgren said in a message to The Reflector following Cronin’s arrest. “I hadn't realized how much that had weighed on my mind the past few weeks. I'm glad that law enforcement tracked the last suspect down and got him into custody without anyone getting hurt.”

Extensive footage was captured on the Holmgren’s home security system of the two men on the day of the arson. It shows them casing the house earlier on the day, then breaking in and stealing all of the electronics they could find (a drone, tablets, computers, a phone), along with jewelry before setting the house on fire with lawn mower gas.

Along with the two suspected arsonists, Joshua Roland’s brother, Michael Roland, was arrested on charges of rendering criminal assistance.
