In Loving Memory of Charles Douglas Shaul: 1937-2026

Posted

Charles Douglas Shaul was born to Rex and Elizabeth Shaul on May 22, 1937, in Akron, Ohio. The son of a career military father, Doug lived in many states and attended many schools, spending his middle school years at Fort Warden on Puget Sound.

He attended Washington State University in Pullman, where he met Jan Zeller. They were married on October 1, 1960, in Battle Ground’s (then) Community Church and were blessed with two sons, Pete and Steve.

Doug spent 28 years in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1988. After completing necessary postgraduate studies at California State University, he became a nationally certified rehabilitation counselor and worked for seven years for California’s Department of Rehabilitation.

He and Jan returned to Washington in 1996 to build a home in Yacolt. Doug then worked for eight years as a counselor for the Oregon Department of Human Services, retiring for good in 2004.

Doug had been a member of Battle Ground Community United Methodist Church since 1997.

He is survived by his wife, Jan; son Steve; daughter-in-law Dorothy, wife of Pete, who died of cancer in 1994; grandchildren Matt and his wife, Nicole, and grandson Joe; and great-grandsons Xander and Lennon, children of Matt and Nicole.

Doug’s greatest joys were church, family, and volunteering.

His celebration of life will be held October 11 at 11:00 a.m. at Battle Ground Community United Methodist Church. Donations to the scholarship fund are greatly appreciated.
