On Friday, Oct. 2, the La Center Wildcats played their homecoming football game against King's Way Christian at La Center High School.
The final score was 56-0, with La Center collecting the win ahead of their big dance.
The game was firmly in La Center’s control within minutes of kickoff.
King's Way received the opening kickoff, ran three plays and then punted.
Wildcat return man, Quinn Stevens, promptly returned that punt for the first touchdown of the night. It did not stop there for Stevens, as he also had another early first quarter touchdown on a throw from quarterback Brody Mills.
King's Way had a tough night and could not generate much offensively. More than that, King's Way was unable to stop the offense and power of La Center.
The Wildcats scored 49 points in the first half on seven touchdowns. La Center spread the wealth as multiple players crossed the goal line on their big homecoming night.
The running clock was initiated at the start of the second half, with the only score of the second half being a big man run for a touchdown. That big man was Wildcat offensive lineman Connor Ohman, who moved to running back for that play in the third quarter. Ohman is listed at 6-foot-3 and 285 pounds and was not going to be stopped before getting his six points.
La Center head coach John Lambert was happy with the win, but said he knows the importance of not taking a lopsided victory for granted. Lambert is revered among high school coaches for good reason, and he knows there are coaching points and takeaways from this win, and that they can improve during practice and preparation before their next scheduled game.
“There’s things here we’ve got to work on,” Lambert said. “There was some sloppiness at the end.”
Next up for La Center is an away game against Kalama High School on Friday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m.
“Kalama’s got some really talented players on their team,” Lambert said. “They have a couple guys that are dynamic, so we’re going to have to prepare for that and work on what we need to work on.”
