Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center, which opened in Aug. 2005, has been named to a list of the 20 Most Beautiful Hospitals in America.

The announcement was made recently by Soliant Health, a nationwide health care staffing company, which conducts the annual polling.

Based on online voting, Legacy Salmon Creek came in at No. 12 from a field of 50.

Voting took place over the past several weeks. Salmon Creek’s sister hospital, Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, came in at No. 18. No other hospitals in Washington or Oregon made the list.

Jonathan Avery, chief administrative officer at Legacy Salmon Creek, said he can’t be more thrilled with the hospital making the list.

"This certainly is an honor, and we are proud of our beautiful facility, " said Avery. "More important to us, though, is that the entire complex is designed to serve patients and their families. Plentiful parking, pedestrian sky bridges, rooms situated for making the most of natural lighting, gardens for walking and reflecting, private rooms with space for family members to stay overnight ... these things help make the facility beautiful, but patient focus drove much of the design."

Avery also spotlighted the "green" nature of the design talking about the energy-efficient lighting systems, indigenous landscaping and pervious surfaces.

The six-story, 468,000- square-foot Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center was designed by Portland-based Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects.

The campus includes the main hospital, an adjacent medical office building and a seven-story parking structure. Previously, the hospital was awarded an Architectural Showcase Certificate of Merit in the Healthcare Design 2006 competition by the Center for Health Design and Vendome Group.

Legacy Salmon Creek’s patient focus is apparent in another polling process as well. Nationwide, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services requires hospitals to conduct standardized satisfaction surveys from a sample of inpatients after they leave hospitals; these scores are publicly reported.

Legacy Salmon Creek’s scores perennially place it in the 90th percentile nationally for overall patient satisfaction.
