Letter to the editor: Fireworks are out of control on the Fourth of July and beyond

Posted

I just read Rick Hauser’s critique of Clark County Council’s latest decision on fireworks.

I have lived in Battle Ground for 10 years, and the last eight years we left town on the Fourth; driven from our home by our neighbors’ thoughtless and reckless use of highly explosive fireworks.

We usually return around midnight to find our neighbors still shooting off explosives, usually until 12:30 to 1:30 a.m.

The streets in the area are littered with the confetti of their efforts; which only tells us that the volume of fireworks used is not decreasing from years past.

It is very upsetting that every July 5, 6 and 7, some really inconsiderate adults randomly set off M-80 like explosives until midnight.

Boundaries and cutoff times do not do anything because they are not enforced. People do whatever they want.

I agree with Mr. Hauser that the entire issue of fireworks should not be decided by the council. The matter should be put up for a city-wide vote so the silent majority can have input.
