SAR increases financial awards for student essays

The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) have announced that financial awards for student essays have significantly increased this school year.

The organization noted there are a number of categories where students from elementary to high school can receive money and recognition.

High school students who participate in the knight essay, Rumbaugh oration or youth video competition can win a $1,000 award for first place from the SAR Washington State Society, while second place is awarded $500 and third place receives $250 in each category at the state level.

Students enrolled in a high school JROTC program can earn awards through writing an essay during their junior year to illustrate how the program prepares them to be good citizens.

Students in the Eagle Scouts program can win up to $1,000 in an essay contest tailored to them. Entries entered into the national competition can earn up to $10,000 for first place.

There’s also an elementary school poster competition and middle school brochure competition which provides opportunities that recognize students at lower grade levels.

“These SAR Youth Programs are just one way that we encourage young men and women to actively learn more about the history of American Revolution and the important sacrifices made by men and women who helped establish a new nation,” stated Jeff Lightburn, a Fort Vancouver SAR chapter trustee, in a news release. “Competition for each of these programs starts with local entries right here in our own community. Students submit their entries to our SAR chapter, and we select the winners who receive financial reward and recognition. In turn, they advance to our state society where the rewards are greater. Students who advance beyond our state society level to National SAR competition can earn substantial scholarships.”

The deadline for submissions are at the end of December and into early 2023, the release stated.
