Woodland offers free hazardous waste disposal for Cowlitz, Wahkiakum residents

Residents from the city of Woodland, Cowlitz and Wahkiakum counties may safely dispose of household hazardous waste for free during a collection event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at the east side of Safeway’s parking lot, 725 Pacific Ave., Woodland.

Hazardous materials will be disposed of by Woodland Waste Control in partnership with the Cowlitz County Department of Public Works and the Washington State Department of Ecology, a news release by the City of Woodland stated.

Proper disposal of hazardous waste ensures the materials do not contaminate the environment or pose a risk to human health, the news release stated.

Accepted items include pesticides, paint, paint thinners, solvents, motor oil, antifreeze, pool chemicals, hobby chemicals, cleaning products, household batteries and more, the news release stated.

Materials from businesses will not be accepted during collections. Unlabeled products, empty containers, leaking containers, explosives, ammunition, radioactive materials, biological material, hypodermic needles and items larger than 5 gallons or 50 pounds will not be accepted, the news release stated.

Each person may bring up to 25 gallons, or 200 pounds, of materials. Additional hazardous materials require approval by Woodland Waste Control, the news release stated.

Participants should safely transport hazardous materials within their vehicles, sealed within the original container to ensure it does not spill during transportation, the release stated.

Hazardous materials may also be disposed of from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Saturdays at the Waste Control Transfer Station Permanent Collection Facility, 1150 Third Ave., Longview.
