Clark County received two 2024 Governor’s Smart Communities Awards from the Washington state Department of Commerce this month. The agency granted 12 awards statewide, and Clark County is one of only two local jurisdictions that received more than one award this year.

The Governor’s Smart Communities Awards highlight the effective implementation of the state’s Growth Management Act and other local or regional planning procedures. Winners are nominated by a panel of independent judges from across the state, a city news release stated.

The Clark County Aging Readiness Plan (ARP) by the Commission on Aging received the Judge’s Merit reward, which recognizes success in more than one judged category. The ARP identifies strategies to improve the community’s capacity to support the county’s senior population, the release stated.

The Housing Options Study and Action Plan (HOSAP) received the second award for its middle housing and low-density residential code amendments. The code changes are intended to bolster housing affordability in the county and enhance the feasibility of smaller single-family homes, the release stated.
