Community invited to review BGPS sex ed curriculum proposals

Battle Ground Public Schools is asking parents and community members to provide input on which of four comprehensive sexual health education curricula it should adopt for fifth- through 12th-grade students.

Those who live in the district are asked to look at and give feedback by March 7 about the sexual health education packages through the district’s website, BGPS stated in a news release. Workbooks and teacher guides are available for review at battlegroundps.org/curriculum-adoption.

The curricula under consideration include Check the Facts Middle School; Goodheart-Willcox Comprehensive Health Skills Middle School and High School; The Great Body Shop Middle School; and HealthSmart Grade 5, HealthSmart Middle School and HealthSmart High School.

The district began looking at a middle school sexual health education curriculum last year, the release stated. To keep what’s taught at middle and high school levels consistent, the BGPS Board of Directors asked the district to evaluate all of the district’s curriculum from fifth grade up.

The district has a committee, which includes parents, community members and staff, who are tasked with recommending a curriculum to adopt. The committee has been working through the year, the release stated. One component of their decision will come from public input.

With approval from the district’s instructional materials committee, the proposal from the group tasked with the sexual health education recommendation will go before the BGPS board in the spring, the release stated.
