Five abandoned boats removed from Lake River, more to follow

The Port of Ridgefield successfully removed five abandoned boats from Lake River in July and plans to remove 10 more in the coming months.

The process is part of a collaboration between the port and the Washington state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) through its Derelict Vessel Removal program. Port of Ridgefield Environmental Projects Manager Penny Hughes highlighted the dangers posed by derelict vessels, noting they can be both navigational hazards and environmental threats.

“This work is crucial for the safety and wellbeing of both our community and the environment. It’s truly a win-win for everyone,” Hughes said in a news release.

The project began in late 2023 after Ridgefield resident Eagle Scout Christian Stiever notified the port of several abandoned boats. Stiever and local volunteers mapped the locations of these boats in April. After the port placed notices on five identified vessels, they were removed in July by a contracted company.

“We’re thankful that Christian brought this issue to our attention and that we could partner with him, along with others in the community, to address it,” Port CEO Randy Mueller said in a news release. “This is a great example of how the port and other public agencies can work together for the benefit of the community and be good stewards of the environment.”

The port has identified 10 additional abandoned boats for future removal and will work with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Clark County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol to locate more.

The cost of the removal process is covered entirely by the DNR. More information about the program can be found at dnr.wa.gov/derelict-vessels.
