New horseback riders take the stage at annual BG horse show

The annual horse-trotting contest was a blast for Clark County’s equestrians, both new and experienced. This past weekend, the Southwest Washington Paint Horse Club (SWWPHC) hosted its annual Colorpalooza all-breed open show at the Clark County Saddle Club facility in Battle Ground.

At the annual show, riders are grouped by age and experience in various categories, including English, Western and halter classes, and are viewed by a professional judge. Battle Ground resident Hanna Grant participated in the English equitation trot, which requires an English saddle, helmet and gear. A one-year novice, Grant said the experience is perfect for beginners.

“It’s all judged on your appearance and positioning,” Grant said. “The judge wants to see that you know you’re gonna win.”

Grant, the oldest in the novice class, appreciated the opportunity to participate despite her short training period. Rev, Grant’s quarter horse, enjoyed the pickle treats provided at the horse show.

“I love it. The community is so nice. Everyone is so helpful,” Grant said.

Vancouver resident Addison Vesneske, age 6, was the youngest rider at the English horse show. She and her quarter horse, Diamond, won a ribbon and horse treats for taking fourth in the novice show.

“I’ve ridden horses my whole life … It’s really fun,” Vesneske said.

SWWPHS President Nicole Slattery-Abilla encourages youth and novices to get involved in horse culture. The annual event is a fun way to get beginners involved and introduced to horse shows.

“It’s really youth-centric, and it’s really just to have fun and foster good sportsmanship,” Slattery-Abilla said. “This one is to celebrate our young and novice riders who are just starting out in our industry.”

SWWPHC celebrates the American paint horse breed but welcomes all breeds in its annual show. The club plans to celebrate its 50th anniversary next summer. To learn about SWWPHC, including membership and future events, visit swwphc.com.
