Picnic shelter season starts May 1 at regional parks

Clark County residents have the opportunity to have exclusive use of picnic shelters at five regional parks during the season that begins Fri., May 1 and runs through Sept. 30.

The five regional parks include Lewisville Park in Battle Ground, Capt. William Clark at Cottonwood Beach Regional Park, Frenchman’s Bar Regional Park, Salmon Creek Regional Park and Vancouver Lake Regional Park.

More information on shelters in the five regional parks,  including the name of the shelter, seating capacity and reservation fees, is available on the county website at: www.clark.wa.gov/publicworks/parks/shelters.html

From May 1 through Sept. 30, shelters in these five parks are available first-come, first-served, provided they have not been reserved for the day. During the other seven months of the year, all shelters are available on a strictly first-come first-served basis. Shelters in other parks, besides the five regional parks listed above, also are available on a first-come, first-served basis year-round.

Since Clark County launched an online reservation system in 2014, picnic shelter reservations can be made 24-7, up to a year in advance but no less than seven days in advance.

“It’s been about a year since Clark County Parks launched the online reservation system,’’ said A. Eric Christensen, parks facilities coordinator for Clark County Parks. “A few people miss the old system, where they would line up outside in winter weather during pre-dawn hours. Most people appear to appreciate the ability to book a shelter online at their convenience.’’

The ease of the system is demonstrated by the fact that picnic shelter reservations are ahead of pace when compared to 2014. Clark County Parks processed nearly 1,300 shelter reservations for 2014. Nearly 800 reservations have been processed so far this year, and there are still five more months left in the 2015 reservation season.

The county’s online system also allows people to reserve sports fields. Users need to go to the parks website, www.clark.wa.gov/parks, and click on “Reservations and events” in the left-handle column or scroll down to “Book picnic shelters here” in the middle of the page.

Phone reservations can be made by calling (360) 397-2285 during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Again, reservations must be made at least 7 days in advance.
