The Ridgefield School District (RSD) honored its employees and students of the month on Dec. 10 at the regular Board of Directors meeting. Two employees and seven students were recognized.
Jessica Verpoorten, kindergarten teacher, Union Ridge Elementary
Jessica Verpoorten is a fantastic student advocate at Union Ridge Elementary. Verpoorten spends time working one-on-one with her students while advocating for their individual needs, a press release by RSD stated. Though she has high expectations for each class member, her lessons are taught with patience and love. “Not only are her students lucky, but so is everyone else who works on her team!” the press release stated.
Angel Slack, lead preschool teacher, Early Learning Center
Angel Slack is a prime example of a lifelong learner, and she brings studious enthusiasm to the classroom at the Early Learning Center, according to the press release. She provides a safe and engaging environment for young learners of all different skill levels and backgrounds in her classroom. “When you walk into her classroom you see students that know what to expect while excited to see what new and exciting activity is waiting for them,” the press release stated. Slack is a supportive pillar at the Early Learning Center, both to her students and colleagues.
Benji Ortega, Pre-K, Early Learning Center
Benji Ortega is a kind student, known for actively contributing as a classroom helper at the Early Learning Center. When not helping out in the classroom, he works to include other students in school activities. His inclusive spirit shines brightly, and he accepts students of all abilities.
Having joined the classroom last fall, Ortega has integrated seamlessly among his peers and has become a vital part of the classroom’s community.
Ruby Hankins, third grade, Union Ridge Elementary School
Ruby Hankins is a quiet and observational gem at Union Ridge Elementary School. Hankins is quick to lend a hand when teachers or peers need aid. She’s often aware of what they need due to her perceptive nature, the press release stated. Hankins is happiest when those she loves are happy, too. “Ruby is the type of kid who brightens every class, not just because she's a good student but because she's truly a good person,” her teacher stated in the press release.
Julia Lucia Hernandez, fourth grade, South Ridge Elementary School
Julia Lucia Hernandez brings joy to the South Ridge Elementary School campus each day. Hernandez steps into the school with a bright smile, greeting others and wishing them a good day. She’s been a role model to her peers since her first day at the school, the press release stated. Her kindness is contagious and has helped bring her class together. “She is a kind and fair leader. We are so lucky to have her here!” her teacher stated in the press release.
Harper Paveglio, fifth grade, Sunset Ridge Intermediate School
Harper Paveglio is a hard-working student who radiates positivity at Sunset Ridge Intermediate School. Each day, Paveglio comes to class with a bright smile and an upbeat attitude that uplifts those around her. She’s a role model for her peers and inspires them to put forth their best efforts, the press release stated. “Harper’s leadership, empathy, and commitment to excellence make her truly deserving of this recognition,” her teacher stated in the press release.
Alexis Bitter, eighth grade, View Ridge Middle School
Alexis Bitter is an inspiring student at View Ridge Middle School. Multiple teachers at the school highlighted her maturity, positivity, kindness and classroom leadership when nominating her for Student of the Month. History teacher Justin Nelson praised her thoughtful and detailed approach to classwork, while English teacher Sarah Ballman noted her valuable insights during classroom discussions. Alexis sets a shining example for her peers for her academic dedication.
Scarlett Carnell, eighth grade, Wisdom Ridge Academy
Scarlett Carnell received her Student of the Month award for her academic excellence at Wisdom Ridge Academy. Carnell began attending the school due to its flexible schedule. Her drive for learning has helped her complete multiple classes early. Carnell partially credited her success to the kind and helpful instruction from her teachers. When not studying, she enjoys horseback riding and competes in equestrian events.
Kyliee Solis, 12th grade, Ridgefield High School
Kyliee Solis is a strong student who transformed into a remarkable individual despite a broken, painful past, according to the release. Solis now sees herself as someone worthy of success and happiness, a stark contrast to when she began her academic journey. “Kyliee’s journey is a testament to the power of transformation, and the importance of rewriting one’s story,” her teacher stated in the press release. Solis has demonstrated a keen interest in psychology and music. Outside of school, she enjoys playing guitar and writing songs. With great effort, love and determination Solis is reaching for a brighter future.
