Woodland High School Social Studies teachers presented a proposal to the Woodland School Board on Sept. 11 to create a Civics Diploma Seal, a first-of-its-kind recognition in Washington. The seal would honor students who demonstrate exemplary civic knowledge and engagement.
The initiative, presented by Shari Conditt, Julia Stepper and Kyla Keefer, aligns with a growing national effort to highlight civic learning, with only seven other states offering similar diploma seals. Students would complete projects in the five civic virtues of justice, civility, self-discipline, service and citizenship to earn the distinction. The seal will be designed to reflect these requirements on high school students’ diplomas and transcripts, a news release by Woodland Public Schools stated.
“I am feeling a little overwhelmed because this seal represents our team, and our belief in our community and our school,” Conditts said during the board meeting.
The proposal received full support from the Woodland School Board and will roll out to students Sept. 17, National Constitution Day.
