Battle Ground Public Schools adopts new safety protocols

Posted

Battle Ground Public Schools (BGPS) is adopting the Standard Response Protocol system this school year to establish standardized emergency procedures and enhance communication with first responders and the community, a newsletter by the school district stated.

Standard Response Protocol, adopted by schools across Southwest Washington, keeps communications clear during emergencies and reduces misunderstandings, the newsletter stated.

Standard Response Protocol uses five terms to describe the school’s current state of emergency:

Hold: An emergency alert issued during health emergencies and similar escalations where school hallways need to remain clear.

Secure: An emergency protocol used to keep students and staff indoors during potential outside threats, such as nearby criminal activity.

Lockdown: A protocol to secure the school when threats are inside, such as an intruder.

Evacuation: A protocol used when students and staff need to move from one location to another, such as during a fire or flooding.

Shelter: A protocol used to protect school occupants from a threat or hazard, such as a tornado or earthquake.
