County Council considering repeal of Chelatchie surface mining overlay

The Clark County Council will soon hold a public hearing on whether or not to repeal a mining overlay, which may cost the county millions in grants, should the overlay continue.

In 2022, the council approved an overlay allowing Granite Construction to mine for aggregate on a 330.95-acre property in Chelatchie. However, Washington’s Growth Management Hearing Board ruled the overlay violated the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA), as an environmental impact statement had not been made prior. The Washington State Court of Appeals is currently reviewing the decision. The county may lose $1.3 million annually in clean water grants and short-term loans over the next five years, totaling $6.4 million in lost funding.

The public hearing will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the Councilors Hearing Room, Sixth Floor, Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St., Vancouver.
